As a pet parent, you may be anxious about the procedure and how your pet will recover afterward, and understandably so. HOW DO WE DO IT?
Since your pet’s safety is paramount, there are specific steps we follow before, during and after their surgery:
Before Surgery
Placing pets under general anesthesia can be risky. Therefore, we need to examine your pet and do blood work to check their health. If we believe the risks are too high with their current condition, we will postpone the surgery and focus on treatment.
For pets that are healthy and ready to go, we premedicate with pain control and place an IV catheter so we can give fluids throughout the procedure. Fluids keep the body hydrated, support the cardiovascular system, and prevent a decrease in blood pressure.
During Surgery
Your pet has a dedicated veterinary assistant monitoring their vitals throughout their surgery. This includes heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen levels, and body temperature. We use various warming methods to keep your pet’s temperature at a healthy level.
Our hospital uses the most up-to-date and reliable monitoring equipment that our team members are highly-trained to operate. This enables us to detect and respond to changes in your pet’s health very quickly.
After Surgery
When your pet is safely out of surgery, we move them into the recovery area for close monitoring. We will also give you a call to let you know how the surgery went and to answer any questions you have. When you arrive to pick up your pet, you’ll receive detailed instructions for helping them through their recovery at home.
In the days following your pet’s surgery, it’s important to stay in touch and keep us updated on their progress. If you see any changes, let us know immediately.

WHEN YOU SHOULD SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS
Cats and dogs can be spayed and/or neutered at approximately six months old. While it may seem natural to allow your animal to remain intact, their reproductive organs can cause various health problems as they grow. Spaying and neutering when your pet is under a year old can help them avoid certain issues later and even extend their lifespan.
You have the final say regarding your pet’s needs. Your veterinarian will provide you with ample information about spaying and neutering and what to expect from the procedure. Still, if you have misgivings, we want to know so we can help you. Your pet’s safety is our main concern.
HOW DOES SPAYING AND NEUTERING KEEP PETS HEALTHY?
There are several ways that spay and neuter surgeries can improve health and prevent future problems:
Spaying (Females)

- Can prevent certain behaviors (such as roaming and in the case of cats, loud caterwauling)
- Reduces potential for breast cancer development

Neutering (Males)
